[edit] MCSG Legislative Body
- In Fall of 2004, I ran for and was elected for the MCSG Legislative Body's Social Sciences representative, along with Roscoe Sopiwnick. This is a light position - I think 30 votes suffices to get you elected.
- I ran with the Common Platform, in an attempt to take over the student government from a faction that was deemed passive and even reactionary by activist students.
- My term in LB has generally been a failure. I didn't know the techcnical stuff (rules of order) well, and I should have paid more attention on how to make political moves with elected LB members who were neutral on CP.
- I joined the Constitutional Reform Committee, Institutional Responsibility Committee, Academic Affairs Commission, and later the Presidential Commission.
- At the Constitutional Reform Committee, I defended the need to maintain Blue-Green Amendment.
- David Boehnke and me (and someone else, I think) were strongly opposed to the general consensus of the Academic Affairs Commission that our proceedings with EPAG should be secretive. Our opposition put strains over Aroosa Saeed, then AAC chair, and continued with Laura Stewart, who replaced her.
- Natasha Hilt learned the basics of blog posting, which we used for posting online minutes of MCSG meetings - it worked! She's still posting! http://macalester.edu/lb/minutes/
- I tried to provide an all-inclusive mailing list+blog+inquiry form machine for transacting FAC's Aditional Allocations process with Ben Johnson, but I (he?) had only two occassions to meet and discuss the idea.
- I was put on Strict Academic Probation in January of 2005, and resigned to my LB spot following college rules.
[edit] ¡Adelante!
- I entered the organization right after a storm had swept acrosss Adelante!, in a big schism between domestic and international students (my guess is that this had to do with spanish being allowed in meeintgs, but I don't know details).
- I tried to keep myself to the administrative side of things: doing web work, typing minutes, filing, etc.
- I got into a big argument with Tawanda Starkes on how meetings should be run in October 2003. Tawanda has never come to Adelante! meetings since then.
- I removed Erik Morales and Tawanda Starkes from the Adelante! listserv in February 2004.
This should all somehow be summarized and go into some article like History of ¡Adelante!
[edit] Activism
- I was one of the few students of color (albeit foreign) ever showing up at student-activism-roundtable-kind-of events, which were predominantly white (95%+). I still don't know how that works out. Was this a class differentiation?
- I thought I was fairly well trained in terms of politics/ideology. It turns out it was not!
