Hola Gente,

Attached is a draft of a letter to be sent to various officers of the college. This mailing is being sent to professors here and eventually even to professors at other institutions for their input. Also - meetings are still scheduled around campus to revise this letter, so please send your contributions as soon as possible for their earliest entry in to the draft - we'd like to send a copy for signatures into the community by the end of this week.

Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect, but: We decided to approach various student organizations for their endorsement - right? Also - I contacted Alumni Relations and they've offered their service in forwarding the final draft to Alumni of Color to read and sign on to. Finally, I'm in contact with various Latin@ Studies professors around the country - is it our wish to solicit their signatures as well? Pleae let me know what our strategy should be! And please, professors, let us know of your professional opinions regarding the language of the letter and the endorsements we seek. Thanks, and enjoy.

-Alejandro

[edit] Agitating For A New Professor

These are some of the points that we came up with for the open letter.

  • Upset that single professor has been forced to leave by hostile work environment, including
  • A replacement must be brought, this is non-negotiable.
  • Furthermore, we are uncomfortable with a new professor being brought in to the same department, where respect for the field of US Latin@ Studies is lacking in the higher echelons of the power hierarchy.
  • This is due to the fact that the Latin@ Studies component of the Hispanic Studies curriculum is the very epitome of lip-service on behalf of the school that espouses commitment to multiculturalism and internationalism.
  • Whereas the fact that the Latin@ Studies professor is forced to cover about 50% of the department’s planned curriculum, the position of the single Latin@ Studies professor in the department is superficial and unfair and is a hallow attempt to quell the large interest in US Latin@ Studies at Macalester.
  • We are at a disadvantage keeping US Latin@ Studies under the jurisdiction of the Hispanic Studies department and hinder academic excellence in lacking a professor who specializes in Latin@ Studies rather than teaching it as a secondary subject matter to Spanish. Reducing a study of an entire culture to a choice of language is disingenuous.
  • We demand that the US Latin@ Studies component of the Macalester curriculum return in the American Studies department where we students, in collaboration with enthusiastic faculty, can ensure that this field of study continues to grow and mature in conjunction with the high levels of interest.
