La Madrugada Promitida!!! Developing Resistance to Global Capital

A Conference at Macalester College, Nov 12-14 in preparation fro WTO protests and a World Bank boycott campaign. Featuring:

  • Debates
  • Workshops
  • Teach-ins
  • Puppet-building

We must begin to organize together and in solidarity with struggles around the world. Join us in building an impenetrable front of resistance to global capital.


Schedule - Locations to be determined soon!
  • Friday 4:30-5:00 pm - Check-in - Students and visitors can get their teach-in packets and free housing info
  • 5:00-6:00 pm - Informal Introductions near the check-in
  • 6:00-7:30 pm - Debate / Panel Discussion on trade liberalization and the WTO. Featuring Mark Weisbot of the Preamble Center and Peter Federer of the Mac Econ Department
  • Evening Entertainment - Coffeehouse jam at the Record Store on Grand.
  • Saturday 8:30-9:30 Morning circle and breakfast. Talk about the day's agenda: changes, proposals..etc
  • 11:15-12:30 - Playing God: The WTO, Genetic Engineering and Minnesota. Also, the WTO and Education (180 Movement for Democracy and Education)
  • 12:30-1:30 - Break for Lunch (Food Not Bombs)
  • 2-3:15 - Global Grassroots Resistance Movements. Also, the WTO and the Environment (With Brett Smith of the Macalester International Studies Department)
  • 3:30-4:45 - Use of puppetry and art in Activism. Also, commodifying labor through globalization with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union Local 17.
  • 5:00-6:00 - Globalizing Freedom: Where do we go from here? Discussion by presenters and participants on alternative visions for the world economy.
  • Sunday 11:00-12:00 - Introduction to Direct Action and non-violence theory and training.
  • 12:30-3:30 - Local direct action planning for Nov 30, the iternational day of action against the WTO.
  • 4:00 - Puppet Building





Community Forum on the WTO and local effects

November 2, 1999 - Speakers included Larry Weis from the Resource Center of the Americas, Larry Weiss from the Resource Center of the Americas, Niel Ritchie from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, and Tara Widner from the United Steel Workers of America.


Wednesday, April 28, Speaker from the Kensignton Welfare Rights Union (KWRU)

The topics were issues of welfare reform, labor, race, human rights and other issues relating to economic justice. The mission statement of KWRU is as follows:

"The Kensington Welfare Rights Union is a multi-racial organization of, by, and for poor and homeless people. We believe that we have a right to thrive - now just barely survive. KWRU is dedicated to the organizing of welfare recipients, the homeless, the working poor and all people concerned with economic justice."


Tuesday, 23 March at Noon outside the Radisson South Hotel in Bloomington - Defend our living standards Union Busters Go Home!

There was a rally to oppose the union busting conference sponsored by a local law firm. It was sponsored by The Meeting the Challenge Committee and the AFL-CIO. Approximately 15 SLAC members went. Pictures soon!


Same Day, 7:00 Olin-Rice 100

MPIRG and SLAC showed The Big One by Michael Moore and a panel discussion with Professers Rachleff and Smith. This event filled Olin 100.
