Macalester is renowned for its commitment to internationalism. It was the first educational institution to fly the UN flag in 1945 and, today, internationalism remains the foremost pillar of its institutional identity. As a preeminent liberal arts college, Macalester has high intellectual standards and is committed to developing students’ potential to the fullest. In terms of these institutional values we believe that no other campus group’s better embodies these ideals than Model United Nations.

Model United Nations is a student organization with an international focus – with chapters in most colleges and even high schools – where member groups congregate regularly to compete and cooperate. As such, it has tremendous potential to raise Macalester’s profile of internationalism nationally and globally. Macalester already provides an environment that is conducive to its success, an environment thick with internationalism. Whether we refer to international student representation on campus or to the college’s international faculty, all endow our community with diverse perspectives. Moreover, the general will to uphold internationalism and be engaged in issues of international significance is a quintessential characteristic of our college. The MUN at Macalester considers itself fortunate to be immersed in this milieu and recognizes that this is a legacy that no amount of material and financial support can buy.
