Marisella Veiga was born in Havana, Cuba, and went into exile with her family in 1960. She was raised both in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Miami, Florida. She received a B.A. in English from Macalester College and a Master's in Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University.
Her writing-including short stories, poetry and articles--has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers and literary anthologies. Veiga has won awards for her short fiction.
For 10 years, Veiga was an English professor at a South Florida community college. Teaching writing in such a diverse community strengthened her belief in storytelling as a way to promote greater understanding among people.
Veiga is dedicated to increasing understanding about the U.S. Latino experience. She does this as a freelance writer and journalist, lecturer and translator. She regularly contributes columns to [[Hispanic Link News Service] and to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. Recent articles have appeared in the Washington Post, Scholastic News and Women's Independent Press. Recently, she was adjunct journalism faculty at Georgetown University.
She lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband, Richard Rettig.
