Macalester Students for Trade Justice (MSTJ) is the student org formerly known as Macalester Students for Fair Trade (MSFT). The name change came about at a meeting during the second year of the group (Fall 2005), during which it was decided that "Trade Justice" more fully encompassed the mission and goals of the group.

[edit] PAST CAMPAIGNS

In 2004-2005, MSFT worked on a Critical Caffeine campaign, in which students called local coffee shops asking about their Fair Trade policies. A list of these shops and their policies was published, and a map of nearby Fair-Trade friendly stores was created to guide students. The students also arranged a "Critical Caffeine Tour", and went around to the coffee shops surveyed and sang songs of appreciation to the shops that had good policies and lobbied with the shops that did not carry Fair Trade to begin. As a result, Coffee News cafe now serves Fair Trade coffee a few times a week where they had none before!

MSFT also worked on an anti-CAFTA campaign Spring 2005. We held a "Free Trade or Free Cookie?" call-in to senators asking them to vote against the bill.
