Bridges' Charter

[edit] Article I. Purpose

Bridges aims to provide a warm and accepting environment for mixed race individuals and transracial adoptees. We welcome participants of all backgrounds who are interested in multiracial, transracial, and cross-cultural issues with the goal of facilitating discussion around these themes. Macalester's multi-ethnic campus has many organizations that cater to specific ethnic and racial issues-the goal of Bridges is to cross the coundaries of these groups, fill gaps in between them, and create greater unity on campus. Bridges would like to organize and promote on-campus events, outreach programs to educate the greater macalester community, and other things that will brind ethnice, racial, or cultural groups together and further the social and political interests of the mixed race community and transracial adoptees.

[edit] Article II. Membership

Bridges shall not treat people differently because of race, creed, color, national origin, disability, age, gender, affectional or sexual orientation, or associational preference of any other classification which would deprive a person consideration as an individual. We invite all members to cooperate and contribute ideas that benefit the organization as a whole.

[edit] Article III. Officers and Duties

A. There will be two co-chairs so that the responsibility of duties is spread between them. The jobs on the co-chairs will be to publicize, and facilitate meetings, to coordinate finances, and to exist as liaisons between other organizations, MCSG, the administration, and the faculty. B. Any member willing to put time and effort to fulfill these duties is qualified to hold office. A chairperson must be dedicated and fully committed to the responsibilities that come along with the job. C. the chairs will be selected by an election process in which they will be voted in by a general consensus of the organization as a whole. Any vacant office will be filled by a special election if it becomes nedessary. D. If an issue with an officer is raised, it will be presented before the organization as a whole to decide about holding a new election or asking the officer to resign.

[edit] Article IV. Advisor

There will be no faculty advisor

[edit] Article V. Meetings

A. Meetins will be held once a week or as determinged by the membership. B. Special meetings will be publicized to members as far in advance as necessary and by any means necessary. C. Five members will constite a quorum (the average number of members that have shown up to meetings thus far) or an issues will be validated by contacting members via their post office boxes D. The co-chairs have the authority to call meetings.

[edit] Article VI. Elections

A. There will be no dues system. B. The Co-Chairs will be responsible for financial affairs, but they will only operate with the consensus of the group. C. Revenues will be reported to the MCSG treasurer by Bridges Delegates to MCSG meetings. D. Should the group dissolve, money and MCSG allocations revert to the Macalester College Student Governments.

[edit] Article VIII. Sunset Clause

This Charter is effective for two years after its approval by the Legislative Body, and can be renewed by the Legislative Body after this period.

[edit] Article IX. Mendments

A. Eligible voting members will be informed of the proposed amendment at several meetings prior to voting, and by means of mail, posting, or email. B.Two-thirds of those present and voting will be required to ratify an amendment. C. All amendments or changes to our constitution will be subimitted under no uncertain terms to the Student Affairs Committee for approval.

If a majority of those present desires to ratify this constitution, then this article must be included.
