[edit] installation packages
- new installations can be copied from /base (not /public_html/base )
- mediawiki 1.4.2, civicspace 0.8.3 (for union.adelantemac.org) and wordpress 1.5 are gzipped
- /simple-mediawiki-1.4.2 is a reduced package for 3.7MB (as opposed to 7.2 MB) by trimming down unnecessary (maybe?) /languages /docs /tests /maintenance folders. most important is /languages which weighs 3MB
- get to the server via shell access. telnet:69.93.250.100:9876 usual ID and PWD. for example, to install a portuguese language (pt) copy
cd base ls (will display current packages) tar -zxvf mediawiki-1.4.2.tar.gz (insert package name here) mv mediawiki-1.4.2 pt mv pt ../public_html/public/
now you can run /public/pt/ for the web interface installation. [3]
[edit] Upgrade log
- 1.4.4. but cache problem persists. probably was not related to 1.4.3 at all. --Yonghokim 06:57, 4 May 2005 (MDT)
- April 25. upgraded to 1.4.2 to clean up code
- MediaWiki 1.4.2 released, upgrade not urgent given their changelog.
- MArch 24. upgraded to mediawiki 1.4.0
- January 25. installed mediawiki 1.3.10
[edit] Memos
- really bizarre - when I tried this tip to change the left nav bar, mediawiki tried searching for the style sheets under /stylesheets and not under /skins , which is where they are. i thought this had something to do with the upgrade, and just renamed the /skins folder to /stylesheets. not the php file looks for the skin error and breaks down while looking for the file. my solution was replicating the folder for both names, but this would create problems in the future wherne working witht the stylesheets (duplicate all changes). i should work out a htaccess redirect solution, or just fix the damn php code -- 09:21, 25 Mar 2005 (CST)
- trying changing localsettings.php by updating $wgStylePath and $wgStyleDirectory (they are supposed to list /skins on the new ver, but listed /stylesheets) but upon deleting /stylesheets, same problem -- 09:17, 26 Mar 2005 (CST)
- 19:53, 26 Mar 2005 (CST) ah hah! turns out .htaccess was only translating /stylesheets/ and not /skins/ . problem fixed, /stylesheets/ removed. (RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/skins/)
[edit] rankings
- currently PageRank 300 (third page) on Google for the searchword adelante -- 09:04, 18 Apr 2005 (CDT)
[edit] disk space
- current disk usage: 82/100 mb.
- public_html/public 18.66 Meg
- public_html/union 10.18 Meg
- base/civicspace-0.8.0.3 10.18 Meg
- public_html/cdl 7.27 Meg
- public_html/jas 7.25 Meg
- base/mediawiki-1.4.2 7.24 Meg
- public_html/freedom 7.07 Meg
- by deleting /union, /civicspace, /cdl, /jas, /freedom, we'll free up 40mb.
- currently at 50MB after cleaning up some. could potentially free up 20MB (8MB squeezing mediawiki + 10MB civicspace). interestingly, MySQL space doesn't count towards space limit. I should probably do a historial purge before leaving school. -- 21:14, 22 Apr 2005 (CDT)
[edit] mysql backup
- http://macalester.edu/adelante/backup/adelante_blog.sql.gz 80kb
- watch out - mailserver_pass is not encoded, potential security leak. changed mail pass to adelante
- http://macalester.edu/adelante/backup/adelante_wiki.sql.gz 3.5mb (14 mb uncompressed)
[edit] emergency response procedures
- CIT deemed AdelanteMac's content offensive
- and IP blocked the domain
- use proxies to connect
- change domain. maybe attaching to a commercial service provider (i.e. geocities?) would help?
- hook up off-campus connections as gatways
- server crashed
- use backup

[edit] Copyring LAS website's style
From: "Yongho Kim" <ykim@macalester.edu> Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2004 8:39 AM Subject: Copying LAS websites' style
Herta,
I am preparing a renewed website for ¡Adelante!, the latin@ student organization, for the next year. I really liked Latin American Studies' website (www.macalester.edu/LAS) and I have tentatively imitated its design style.
I think I should try to receive some form of permission from the creators of the LAS website before proceeding further. Could you forward her or him this message and let me know what they say?
The website, still in development, is at www.macalester.edu/Adelante/fa04
Thank you! Yongho ¡Adelante! Co-Secretary cc: Clara Weinstock (Co-Secretary), Emma Gallegos (PR)
Hi Yongho and Todd, Yongho, The person you're trying to reach is my son, Todd. Todd, I'm forwarding this message from Yongho Kim to you. Do you permit him to copy the web page style you created for the Macalester LAS web site? I looked at your "under development" site Yongho. I think it looks great. Thanks everyone. Herta
I'm completely fine with it. And she's right. It looks great. Peace. -Todd Pitman
