[edit] mailing list

mailing list distribution
mailing list distribution

¡Adelante! runs four layers of mailing lists, which are distinguished from each other by the frequency (and implied relationship with adelante) of emails. Subscribership in these mailing lists is designed so that those in the larger layers are already signed up in the smaller layers (someone in the adelante support group is already in the newsletter).

One assumption is that those who don't necessarily come to ¡Adelante!'s meeting will still be interested in hearing about our events, or even about what's going on in the meetings. They are potential future active members, and the best way of recruiting them is through personal contact, but if time is not permitting, they can be reached via thse mailing lists depending on their degree of availibility/desire to "catch up" with adelante.

[edit] History

The website was first created under www.macalester.edu/adelante when Tawanda Starkes commissioned Yongho Kim to create a site for ¡Adelante! in the Spring of 2003. [1] The site subsequently grew in size as the organization was grappling with the issue of inside/outside perspective. [2]

The option of an external server was tested using PHP-Nuke during the Summer and Fall of 2004, which didn't work well. A few experiments of scability were tried for event posting and the conclusion was that no sustained maintanence was possible under the single webmaster concept. [3]

In January of 2005, MediaWiki was tested out, with the concern that given there was no built-in calendaring option, (unlike TikiWiki or other community-focused, and not knowledge-focused, CMS, scalability would again become a problem. This issue is yet to be seen.
