Dear Macalester Student:

As you read this letter, candidates for Macalester College Student Government (MCSG) executive positions are scouring the campus to campaign for your vote. Platforms and slogans are being tossed around like confetti at a New Year's Eve party. Fervent energies are being invested in door knocks, poster runs, and pitches for a better student community at Macalester.

m this hectic period of time, it may occur to many students to ask these candidates what exactly their position would do, or even to ask the bewildered question I received at least once while campaigning last year, "Do we have a student government?"

While I believe all of the candidates running are capable of giving a quality response to this question, it is important to offer to every student a basic glimpse of student government structure and function. The 'map' included in this mailing should provide that glimpse, as well as add a sense of transparency to an organization that at times may seem unnecessarily complex.

If you take some time to study this snapshot of MCSG, you should start to see the way that each position adds to the capacity of student government to address a diverse range of student concerns.

Given the volume of issues we deal with, from requests for new student organizations to soliciting input for the advancing discussion on a revised curriculum for the college, I assure you that each of these pieces serves an important part in developing student leadership, and in providing energy and support for new initiatives.

I encourage you to take a few moments as well to think about the concerns you have as a student, and the role MCSG does or does not play in addressing your needs. Let these issues guide you in your interactions with candidates, and be sure to give them tough questions to think about. For your convenience, the names of all of the candidates and the positions they are running for are included on the other side of this letter. If you want a better opportunity to fire- test these would be officeholders, come to the candidate debate on Tuesday, April 5th from 8pm on in the Weyerhaeuser Boardroom. And be sure to cast your ballot in the Campus Center on Thursday, April 7th from 8am-8pm.

Sincerely, Michael Bames

President, MCSG
