Macalester College Student Government (MCSG), is the Student Government organization of Macalester. Approximately 30 students, serving in various positions on the Executive Board, Legislative Body, Commissions, LB Committees or the Program Board run the organization.
Its main role is distributing its $300,000 budget, collected from student activity fees, and representing student voice to the Macalester administration.
MCSG is closely aided by staff at the Dean of Students office, in particular associate director Jim Hoppe.

[edit] Location
MCSG officers work in an office room located in the Second floor of Campus Center. FAC budget forms, budget allocations and account codes are posted/available here.
Early in the fall, the Vice President posts notices on the selection of student reps to various college and Board of Trustees committees, including SRC, RPC, Task force on Budget etc.
FAC Chair also posts applications for its FAC team at the end of the academic year.
MCSG posts the majority of its work-study student position applications (secretary, office manager, accountant) and other ad hoc positions/representatives in the board.
Executive Board and commission meetings occur in the office.

Proportional Representation for MCSG
P.R. assumes that elected bodies should mirror the voters who elected them.
Proportional Representation, according to the Center for Voting and Democracy, “describes electoral systems in which like-minded groupings of voters will win legislative seats in better proportion to their share of the popular vote than in winner-take-all elections.”
Elections for MCSG executive positions occur in the spring semester for the following academic year.
Elections for exec. positions for the 2006-2007 school year took place on April 06, 2006.
Representatives to the LB are now (as of Spring 2005) staggered in their election cycle. Upperclass Rep.s are now elected in the spring after Exec.s.
See MCSG Elections for more information on individual election years in the past.
