[edit] redirections?
- Purpose
- things often have different names. When Adelante! uploads its minutes at MPKB, we sometimes refer to QU as well as Queer Union, or sometimes E-funk instead of Environmnental Funk! If they all point to a single entry, the article itself can be located in the most popular name, and the other variations (acronyms, etc) can be set to redirect to the actual article. So typing the following
#redirect[[St. Olaf/Gay, Lesbian or Whatever!]]
becomes this kind of a redirect page
and when in the future people click in those links, or search for the alternative names, they are automatically shown the content of the main article.
When you are redirected, a small link is shown telling you that you have been redirected from redirection page A and shows you a link to force-open the redirect page.
To change redirects, go back to the original link by clicking the little link underneath the title.
- redirects work only on one level, if there are two redirects one after another thye won't work, and will stop at the first redriected page. See Special:DoubleRedirects
- when you "move" pages, the old name is left as a redirect so that old links can catch up

[edit] categories?
i'm not totally sure what categories as supposed to be used for, but for the moment i'm using them as logical markers.. you can link to a category by writing
[[:Category:nameofcategory]]
and you can categorize an article by writing the Category without the preceding colon :
once you categorize a page, there's categoy links at the bottom of the article. those link to category pages. category pages show
- the page
- subcategories
- articles tagged or classified as that category
you can subcategorize a category by categorizing it. does that make sense? enter [[Category: in a category page.
[edit] lists?
For extensive machine editing such as importing a list of names and wikifying them, the program EditPad 3.5, a free software by JGsoft, will help you automate the process a bit. It saves you tons and tons of time. Further time-saving tasks can be combined using MS Excel by using the tab function (which basically lets you switch between columns and rows). Q's?
