Because EPAG makes ultimate decisions regarding the college's academic life, such as the termination or promotion of a department, approval of programs and initiatives, faculty allotment policies and the like, the interests of many at Macalester are concentrated in the issues EPAG handles.
Because of this, EPAG members have consistently been led to believe that their task needs to proceed in the utmost secrecy. EPAG members are nosy about their meeting minutes and any kind of statement, for they fear "the mindless revolt of angry students and faculty".
MCSG's AAC has had problems with this implicit practice within EPAG, to the point that AAC members were obligated to discuss a proposal they were not allowed to see by their own AAC Chair. Such was the case of former AAC Chairs Colleen Stockmann and Aroosa Saeed who were criticized by AAC members as being nontransparent.
In the MCSG Elections for 2005-06, no candidates filed for the AAC position after strong clashes between AAC and EPAG during the curricular renewal process regarding information disclosure made it apparent that AAC had no power except that of opinion within EPAG.
