Chicana/o is a term denoting an identity with an activist background that connects back to the forced occupation of Texas and the southwestern states of what is now the United States by U.S. armies upon the then Mexican territory.
Many, and sometimes competing, interpretations and lineages are offered in explaining the roots of the term - as a political language, different perspective emphasize different aspects in the tradition of political struggle.
