[edit] ¡Adelante!'s Constitution, ???? - 2004
Adelante! has been created to provide guidance, support, and a fundamental foundation to improve and promote the interests of Latino and Chicano students in the Macalester community.
[edit] NAME AND GROUP PURPOSE
[edit] Name
- The name "Adelante!" has been selected to represent the Chicano/Latino students of Macalester College. For further clarification of the parameters of this organization, we offer the definition of Chicanos and Latinos:
- "Chicanos are Mexican Americans or Mexicans who choose to claim their indigenous roots" and
- "Latino signifies any person that has Latin American ancestry."
- The ramification of this definition of Chicano/Latino is key. The purpose of this formation is so that students with the noted ancestry and students interested in the social, cultural, and historical backgrounds of Chicano/Latinos are provided with a catalyst to benefit the needs of these students.

- To promote social and educational issues that face Chicano/Latino students.
- To inform the public on the common values of family, religion, and social responsibilities common to Chicanos/Latinos
- To improve self-esteem on the individual Chicano/Latino by establishing a support system that can help facilitate the needs he or she may warrant.
- To educate the public on the conflicts that arise with Chicano/Latino students and promote awareness of these ideas.
- To increase the number of Chicano/Latino oriented classes, lectures, and seminars.
- To promote the hiring of more Chicano/Latino faculty and staff.
- To promote the recruitment Chicano/Latino students.
- To establish a strong relationship between Chicano/Latino students at Macalester and the Chicano/Latino community of the Twin Cities and surrounding areas.
[edit] THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS
[edit] General Decision-Making
The process that Adelante! will utilize in order to make a decision within the organization will be administered through executives (Co-presidents). Decisions will be made by consensus.
[edit] Election Code
Of the two executive positions: Co-Presidents, at least one of the officers must be of Chicano/Latino descent. The offices of Co-Secretaries, Treasurer, and Public Relations are open to all Macalester students. All members are eligible to vote for the offices stated in Article III.
[edit] RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS AND OFFICERS
[edit] Members
- Membership to Adelante! is open to all of the Macalester community.
- Anyone of Chicano/Latino descent is automatically a member, unless requested otherwise.
- Everyone is entitled to voice their own opinion during Adelante! meetings. Meetings are open to the public. All members are encouraged to become involved with Adelante! to formulate policy.
[edit] Membership of the Executive Board
- The Executive Board shall be authorized to act for members where action is pending and the group is unable to meet. The action taken must be brought to its members at its next meeting for ramification.
- Officers are expected to attend all meetings or have an alternate attend the meeting in extreme cases. If they are able to, they should notify the group prior to their absence.

[edit] Co-Presidents
- Elected annually by Adelante! members.
- Is the official spokesperson for the organization.
- Calls to order and mediates Adelante! meetings.
- Calls special meetings with the consent of the executive board.
- Carries out duties in which the group may direct.

- Elected annually by Adelante! members.
- Keeps budget records and advises Adelante! of upcoming financial matters.
- Is responsible for financial transactions.
- Provides monthly reports on the fund-raising events.
- Provides budget records to members by request.
[edit] Co-Secretaries
- Elected annually by Adelante! members.
- Assumes general responsibilities of secretary and historian:
- Keeps minutes of meetings.
- Records minutes and sends out typed copies to members.
- Helps coordinate agenda for current/following meetings or events.
- Notifies members of meetings and events within a period of two academic days.
- Keeps an autobiography of Adelante! events through an album of photographs, flyers, programs, and brief descriptions.
[edit] Public Relations
- Elected annually by Adelante! members.
- Creates publicity and informs the Macalester and local community of Adelante! events through flyers, e-mails, and publications.
- Is a liaison between Macalester?hibar;s Chicano/Latino community and similar organizations in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and in ACTC schools.

- Elected annually by Adelante! members.
- Represent each of their respective classes:
- 1st Years Representative
- 2nd Years Representative
- 3rd Years Representative
- 4th Years Representative
- Serve as channel for communication between Adelane! and their respective year.
[edit] REMOVAL OF OFFICERS
Any officer may be removed for just cause:
- Not fulfilling the duties of their office.
- Dismissal from the College.
- Absence from three consecutive meetings in a semester, except in extreme circumstances.
- Removal must be made by the majority of the organization.
- A vacancy is filled with the approval of the majority of its members.
[edit] AMENDMENT RATIFICATION PROCESS
Any portion of the constitution may be amended through the executive board. Decision will be made through consensus.
[edit] THE SUNSET CLAUSE
Adelante! will be subject to the required "sunset clause" by the requirements described in the student handbook.
Adelante! is designed to represent the differences of all Domestic and International Latinos (as) and Chicanos (as). We the Chicano/Latino students of Macalester College feel that Adelante! will serve as a catalyst to ensure and preserve the aspirations of all Chicano/Latino students.
