[edit] The name of this organization shall be ¡Adelante!

  1. ¡Adelante! represents Latin@ students of Macalester College. The present charter uses the term “Latin@” to refer to the following peoples:
    • Chicana/os, who are Mexican Americans or Mexicans who choose to claim their indigenous roots;
    • U.S. Latina/os, which signifies any person that has Latin American ancestry; and
    • Latin Americans, who have a Latin American national origin or have come from Latin American countries.
  2. The ramification of the definitions of Chicano, U.S. Latino and Latin American is key. The purpose of this formation is so that students with the noted ancestry or national background and students interested in the social, cultural, and historical backgrounds of Chicanos, U.S. Latinos, and Latin Americans are provided with a catalyst to benefit the needs of these students.
  3. While we recognize that the term “Latin@” is not and should not be an all-encompassing identity, the political and economic relationship developed between the United States and Latin American peoples -of mixed blood and indigenous roots – makes us aware of the historical common past and future goals that we as Chicanos, U.S. Latinos, and Latin Americans, share; and by affirming these commonalities we will deliver a stronger voice in any society as a powerful group. Furthermore, we are cognizant of the imbalance in representation and institutional support provided for domestic and foreign Latinas, and shall address it accordingly in Article II, Section I.ii.
  4. The name "¡Adelante!" has been selected because the word “¡Adelante!” carries a particular meaning in everyday and activist contexts. “¡Adelante!”, as used in phrases such as “¡Pa’lante¡” (“¡Para adelante!”) implies that we are moving forward despite obstacles, always trying to better ourselves and improve our situation.
