[edit] Mission Statement

The Cultural House is a safe space for domestic students of color and allies who are interested in learning from and contributing to a multicultural environment.

The C-House strives to be a symbol of connection for people of color at Macalester and in the Twin Cities. Although the C-House is organized around the dismantling of racism, there is careful attention paid to the intersection of multiple identities, including gender, class, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ability, and religion. Programming and many cultural organizations who utilize the C-House are structured in a diasporic manner that recognizes that race may have variant meanings in an international context.

[edit] Location

It is located between George Draper Dayton (GDD), Bigelow, and Ruminator Books, at the corner of Macalester Street and Grand Avenue

In the basement, the Cultural House houses two cultural organization office rooms with a computer on each room and a printer at the larger office. ¡Adelante! shares the larger office with PIPE, B.L.A.C., MIO, Bridges, and ASA. [edit] Ethnic Housing in the 70's

In the 70's, three minority groups had their own houses: the Black House, the Native American House, and the Hispanic House. The current Cultural House was originally the Black House; the others, located on Vernon Street next to the Language Houses, were sold due to lack of funds. ¡Adelante! has advocating in the past, along with other cultural orgs, for the creation of separate ethnic houses.

[edit] Residents

Ten residents and a Community Assistant committed to multiculturalism live in the Cultural House every year. Residents are chosen through an application and interview process with the Cultural House Advisory Board.
