¡Adelante! members, in cooperation with professors and coordinated by Alex Flores, have written a response in the form of an open letter to the current situtation of Latin@ Studies at Macalester, which ended in the only Latin@ Studies professor Maria Elena Cepeda leaving the school after the Spring of 2005.
The letter demands:
- that Latin@ Studies be incorporated by the American Studies, and not the Hispanic Studies, department
- hiring a visiting instructor in Latin@ Studies for the 2005-06 year.
Read the letter and have your organization endorse it.

[edit] To Macalester Student Org leaders
From: Alex Flores <aflores@macalester.edu> To: Macalester Student Org leaders Date: Apr 21, 2005 5:57 PM Subject: [Programming] URGENT ACTION REQUIRED
Attached to this email is a letter drafted by Adelante regarding an issue of grave importance to our members and hopefully to your organizations as well. The letter goes into great depth to address the issue of Latin@ Studies on campus and is a call for action.
We ask that you present this letter to your organizations and ask your members to vote to endorse it. We would like to present the letter to key members of the campus administration with the signature of every student organization on campus. We hope that this powerful message will give the administration pause and as with other issues this past year, let the school know that we are watching, we are vigilant, and we are active.
Please try to respond by next Tuesday, the 26th of April. We are sorry for the rush, but time is running short on this semester. Thank you so much for taking time from your schedules to work in solidarity with us in this effort.
