[edit] The Mantra of Multiculturalism

  • Group read The Mantra of Multiculturalism
  • a lot of discussion on why and how to disclose/rework the mantra.
  • group decides it is most honest to first show this to the Department of Multicultural Life, as they may disagree with some points. Alex Flores will write them an letter and attach the Mantra.
  • SACKNESS and DISCS , and Hughes programs are mentioned as alternatives in place to MMUF
  • it is pointed out that #1 is outdated and might be a slap in the face to Deloris
  • yongho argues that should the plan of bringing the mantra to public debate carry forward, other SoC orgs should be involved (if they want to) in the process of analyzing/commenting on the text.
  • Alex Flores proposes not to bring up this issue during Multicultural Sampler weekends. Group agrees.
[edit] Multiculturalism Library
  • Alex Flores points out that the Multiculturalism Library could be implemented
  • Yongho argues that the books in the library are not even part of the student's research process as they are not on CLICnet, that this "ghettoizes" multiculturalism in academia to a certain extent
  • Alex Flores will talk about this as well with DML

[edit] Latino Studies Conference in Mankato

  • group approves sponsoring (paying for) Matt Bosch's registration fees and transportation to the Latino Studies Conference in Mankato, recognizing him as a representative of Adelante!

[edit] DNBAM

  • Miriam Larson invites everyone to come to the democratization meeting/DNBAM on tuesday at noon, CC 207. She says we could include the Mantra as part of the project. (I think we cannot include the Mantra in the conversation as we have to talk with DML first)

Trying to Build Coalitions for Decision Making Reform:

  • Student Org Meeting this Tuesday from 12-1PM in CC207 half networking, half talking about giving students more impact on decision making. Know people in clubs that have yet to get involved...get them here! More then one person from each club can come!
  • STUDENT ASSEMBLY A WEEK FROM TUESDAY,(the 15th) 4:30 PM IN THE CHAPEL. TALK TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED. WE NEED TO GET PEOPLE THERE.
  • Presentation to the Trustees on decision-making reform. Interested? Email me or come to the meeting Tuesday. Have ideas, send them out to the list.

Tasks:

  • I am typing up a form for a taskforce on student role in decision making...to be included in presentation to trustees, will send out for edits
  • Perry is going to talk to Joi Lewis about the Multicultural Advisory Board, get some advice
  • Eric is going to write an editorial for the MacWeekly about other models and relating to the mistake about Carleton's structure
  • Everyone at the meeting is going to talk to as many people as possible about the student assembly, upcoming org meeting

We had less people at this last meeting, and could use some help. The next meeting will be at Sunday at 2PM in Carnegie 006 (an hour earlier). Hopefully more people will be able to come.

Thanks and lets get cracking,

David

[edit] Mailing List

  • Alex Flores requests the creation of per-class mailing lists so that you can write "dear juniors and seniors" so that more upperclassmen can get involved.
    • Daniela indicates that writing them personally is more effective.
  • Carmen and Clara say that they receive duplicate emails becuase they are subscribed to multiple mailing lists. (e.g. "meetings" and "latino-chicano")
    • Yongho says that duplicate emails must be a mistake/misimpression.
[edit] March Newsletter
  • Yongho asks for input for the next newsletter
  • Miriam Larson is interested in teaching Bolivian Dance "caporales"
  • Yongho remembers there is a capoeira group that wants to use school facilities to do dance lessons, who were referred directly to Brian Wagner who may come back to us with discounted lesson rates.
  • Alex Flores and Vincent Garcia mention traditional ndance groups, los nativos, etc

[edit] Recruitment/Admissions

  • Alex Flores talked with Karla on writing a letter to latino PFs from Adelante! welcoming them. (and encouraging them to enroll?)
  • Maribel Frias will organize the making of a banner to welcome them.
  • Alex Flores also proposes making a block party outside (I didn't get the details down on this one)
  • Carmen Phillips wil write the letter to the accepted students

[edit] Cinco de Mayo parade

  • Riverview Economic Development Center sent an invitation to Daniela as an Adelante! member to participate in the Cinco de Mayo parade which takes place in May 7th. (Saturday) The theme is "Heritage and Colors of West St. Paul"
    • This is an event that takes place both in West St. Paul and Minneapolis.
  • Daniela proposes going to the Minneapolis one, as the West St. Paul one has been commercialized.
    • Vincent argues that West St. Paul feels more authentic
    • Daniela will "research" both St. Paul and Minneapolis parades and report on next week.
  • group is concerned that this occurs during finals week
    • Daniela proposes preparing everything before the event so that students will only have to show up for the actual parade.
  • Daniela also knows someone who can make masks for people to wear during the parade.
  • gropu approves requesting additional allocations for the masks, the registration fee ($30 for nonprofits), and any other costs for participating in the parade.

[edit] Concert with MN NYCE

  • Alex Flores brings news from MN NYCE that they want to coorganize a concert.
  • group decides to postpone co-concerts until the fall semester.
