[edit] Mission Statement

¡Adelante! is dedicated to increasing the awareness and appreciation of U.S. Latin@, Chican@ and Latin American culture, politics, and society at Macalester. We address local and global issues concerning Latin@s, and encourage the participation of all individuals both at the Macalester campus and the surrounding Twin Cities community.

[edit] Membership

Given the size of the overall student body at Macalester, our membership stays around 60 students. This encompasses active members -about 15 students- and all students who identify themselves as latin@. ¡Adelante! shares its member pool with B.L.A.C., MIO and QU; some are also at CSA, PIPE and Bridges.

[edit] Reach

Meeting attendance fluctuates between 5 and 25 students. Event attendance varies - 30 is the norm but some large events attracted over a hundred students and local neighborhood residents. ¡Adelante!'s email mailing list reaches 700 key individuals and organizations in the midwest and Latin America

[edit] Funding

¡Adelante! receives funding from the Macalester College Student Government (MCSG) as a recognized student organization. Typical annual spending amounts to $3,000 after additional allocations. (However, there is no fixed budget - it is negotiated before the beginning of each semester) These cover event expenses (food, equipment rental), speaker honorariums and transportation and performance fees. Auditing is conducted by the FAC of the MCSG at the end of every academic semester.

¡Adelante!'s events are regularly funded by the Program Board, the Hispanic Studies Department, the Latin American Studies Program, and the American Studies Department.

[edit] Campus Connections

The following staff and faculty at Macalester work closely with us: Mattie White, Assistant Director of Campus Programs for Multicultural Life; Matt Bosch, Residential Life Director (moved to UMN); María Elena Cepeda, professor at Hispanic Studies and Latin American Studies Program specializing in U.S. Latina/o Studies (on a 1-year leave at Williams College during 2005-06 more).
