[edit] Explanation of Reallocations

Adelante! has been discussing the issue of using the remaining funds with a various cultural organizations. After conversations with leaders of MASECA, Afrika!, MIO, PIPE, Bridges and QU, we came to the following arrangements.

Org dinner
has been changed to be held on Sunday May 1st at the home of Teresita Ortiz, Mexican worker's rights, anti-globalization activist and chicana poet from Chiapas, who is the director of Centro de Derechos Laborales at the Resource Center of the Americas. The meeting will provide an occassion for Adelante! members to meet with prominent community activists such as Susana de Leon and Luis Mendoza.
Our van trip will comply with the Blue-Green amendment, incorporated as part of the MCSG Constitution in May of 2004, Criteria #1 ("Decision results in minimal transportation resources,") as the location is much closer to campus than Conga Latin Bistro, and we are not using waged labor that is in risk of being exploited. (compliant with Blue-Green amendment Criteria #7: "Workers: Decision contributes to economic forms that provide safe, meaningful working conditions and the means to live within ecological constraints.")
Vincent Garcia
Amount approved by LB in the last week turns out to be insufficient as he will also have to pay hotel accomodations.
Activist Roundtable
Miriam Larson went to the Activist Roundtable on April 23rd. Participants included organizers from the Anti-War Committee, Anti Church Committee, Revolutionary Dance Party at MCTC, MAPA, MAP and WAMM (Women Against Military Madness) Fees would pay for professional moderators, hired by the roundtable organizers from the Institute for Authentic Dialogue. Adelante! could not decide earlier to request funds for this event because it was uncertain until April 22nd, who would be able to participate in it. Participation fees are in-kind and are not necessarily required.
Merideth Abby speaking on Coke
an Anti-War Committee activist [insert name here] will come to Macalester on May 3rd Tuesday at 4:30pm to talk in Campus Center 214 to a group of students about the abuses committed by Coke in Colombia and carry on an intensive one-on-one training with those present. There is a need to inform student body since the issue is still so prevelant in our community. This effort is also a strategic move to comply with our own standards as delineated in the 2004 Charter's Charter2/Purpose#Coalitional Relationships section and Charter2/Purpose#Community Partnership sections.
Digital Camera
There is heavy cultural org leadership demand for this item for our events (Includig MIO, Afrika!, MASECA, Adelante!, MESA, ASA, and more). Would be kept by Mattie White, Cultural Org Advisor. Having a procedure outside of Media Services allows for a more culturally flexible usage of Macalester resources.
Dry-Erase Board
Cultural orgs would like to equip the C-House to be an activist space as well as a safe-space. This would be put up in the C-House lounge area where many orgs meet, in order to draw up budgets, and plan for events in a structured manner.
Web server upgrade and domain name
Other organizations have expressed an interest in using a common web space. This upgrade would allow Adelante!, QU and Bridges (as a start) to accomodate their organizations and create a central hub for the state of Minnesota that will be able to self-sustain itself with its growing contributors, much like Wikipedia.
Videos
QU, Bridges, and Adelante! and MPJC expressed need for a multicultural library. This will also support the Infoshop initiative.
T-shirts
originally the request was made for 20 of its members, but the board overlooked the fact that new members arriving next year would expect the T-shirts as well. The t-shirts will be further subsidized by an allocation of $250 from Campus Programs, as $5 per t-shirt cannot possibly cover the full cost.

Yours,

Alex Flores

[edit] email to orgs

PIPE, BLAC and MIO,

¡Adelante! has some money (~$150) left over from its Spring allocations, and we just found out the PIPE is having a large unspent amount ($1,300) that is willing to share with Adelante!. We are making plans to purchase supplies and long-term tools that might benefit cultural orgs generally. In particular, we are thinking of:

Light decorations $100
usually used during Christmass in Harlem and MIO Cultural Show (right?)
Computer Projector $700
to display presentations without the hassle of going to Media Services (renting out with ID is especially complicated for BLAC and Adelante! who meet over weekends, possibly similar problem for orgs that meet very late at night - QU and MIO?)
Whiteboard with tripod for the C-House lounge $100
other orgs who meet in the Campus Center get to organize their agenda & meeintg points neatly (especially useful when planning calendar-sensitive stuff or budget) but cultural orgs don't.

These are quite random ideas (we just found out yesterday) so far. Do you have any ideas on how the money should be spent? There's another program (Tsione) to which $500 has been assigned, but we could cut that a bit if more funds are needed. I'm particularly interested in what things you feel we need at the Cultural House or as cultural organizations at large.

More details on this budget is at this page

http://adelantemac.org/public/en/Budget/Spring_2005

So let us know (write to adelante@macalester.edu) what your ideas are on spending this money.

Of course once we decide on particular items to purchase, we'll need to talk this with Ben Johnson and get the internal transfer of allocations approved by the FAC, but usually that works fine.
