[edit] Discussion on Diversity Weekend
Vincent is the PB Diversity Committee Coordinator and asked Aaron and Yongho on why DW should not be institutionalized. Yongho expressed strong dislike of former PB Chairs Erin K. Miller and Erla Osk and how they tried ot "institutionalize" DW. Alex R argued that by institutionalizing there is at least the guarantee that DW happens every year.
[edit] Adelante! won collaboration award along with other orgs for Diversity Weekend
Alex R brought the collaboration award from Multicultural Life, given during the All Identity Collectives Retreat. Group self-congratulated and briefly discussed what to do with it. Alex R proposed framing it and keeping it (in Adelante's office?)
[edit] Latin@ Studies at Macalester
Alex Flores reported 8 student organizations endorsing the letter so far, including Bridges. STARSA is endorsing it. Clara expressed she felt strongly connect to the letter since she helped draft it. Yongho offered distributing the notice to other student organizations at ACTC schools.
[edit] Endorsing LB candidates
Alex Flores brought up a list of LB candidates that he considered to be supportive to issues relevant to Cultural orgs in general, including ¡Adelante!. Alex proposed endorsing these cnadidates as an organization.
- Purpose
- Yongho asked for clarification if the "supportiveness" meant casting votes on hard issues pertinent to cultural orgs. Carmen corrected this view arguing that what wsa even more important was that given some of these students were members of cultural orgs, multiculturalism was a part of their lives, thereby taking up the issues seriously.
- Validity
- Aaron posed the question of issues arising around multiple identities. For instance, given that he was an Art major, he would give the candidate's major (whether or not the person is a Fine Arts, and then, Studio Art, major) primary importance. Alex R also posed the question that endorsing LB candidates based merely on Alex F's recommendation seemed hasty and not a fully informed decision.
- Effectiveness
- Alex R. questioned the actual effectiveness of steps like these, given that candidates could really say anything they wanted (that they may or may not plan in carrying out) just to get votes. Yongho voiced support for endorsing candidates, arguing that student organizations should start getting more politically involved, and worrying about any potential abuses of such involvement later, because there isn't any involvement at all, which is why students are so disengaged.
- Accountability
- Clara was concerned that 1) not every member of Adelante! was present at the moment to raise concerns (if any) and 2) it was not possible to fairly cast a "vote" on the issue of endorsing a candidate, because people would be afraid of voicing opinions of dissent on a decision that was highly personal (i.e. it came down to the preference upon the particular candidate).
The discussion carried on for quite a long time, and Alex F called for the end of it without reaching a conclusion, in the interest of handling other items in the agenda.
[edit] Fall 2005 Budget
Ben Johnson, chair of FAC cut 11k from Adelante!'s 16k budget proposal for Fall 2005. Details at Budget/Fall 2005. Alex F made the point that despite having the biggest cuts, Adelante! has received the largest budget assignation (7% of total allocations).
Group argued that it needs to go back to FAC for additional assignments given that a symposium cannot take place with the 5K assigned. (This idea was retracted later in the evening)
Yongho also made the point that even though money was only allocated to the Latino Studies Symposium, once a sum of money has been allocated to an organization, its internal (re)distribution (to spend it in different events) is "soft", without requiring accounting action, and that it can easily be renegotiated with the FAC chair.
[edit] Election of 2005/06 Officers
The positions of Co-Chair, Co-Secretaries, and Latino Heritage Month Coordinator, plus some others, are open. Election was carried informally.
- Alex Flores was voted as Co-Chair
- Alex Rivero offered to work as Latino Heritage Month Coordinator but warned that his task was coordinating tasks, and thus members should be willing to help out.
- Aaron Johnson-Ortiz will help out with Public Relations, given that Clara Weinstock will be on study abroad during the Fall of 2005.
Yongho proposed Miriam Larson as Secretary, but group decided that she had a lot of committments. For the remaining positions - Operations Coordinator and Co-Secretaries, the group will wait for willing first years or some new faces that might pop up next year.

[edit] Org dinner
- Aaron Johnson-Ortiz offered to have the org dinner at his mother's (Teresa Ortiz) house with community members. The place can probably handle 30 people, and Aaron will cook hoping that other will come and help earlier.
- After debating on people's availability during finals week (classes end May 4th), group agreed to have the org dinner on Sunday May 1st 2:30pm.
- Alex Rivero offered to drive a van carrying people back and forth.
- Based on Budget/Spring, group decides to spend $400 towards paying Aaron on food and spend $70 on one van+mileage. This leaves some extra amount of money towards T-shirts
[edit] Invitations
- Group discussed how should the invitation to the org dinner work.
- Alex Flores proposed using evite to make RSVPing easier. He will organize evite.
- It was agreed to invite the following, expecting that not everyone would actually be able to attend
- 15 Adelante! members
- 3 RCTA members, including Emmanuel Ortiz etc
- 4 Multicultural Life staff - Mattie White, Karla Benson-Rutten, Joi D. Lewis, Sedric McClure
- members of the community with whom Adelante! has worked in the past: Luis Mendoza, Amalia Anderson
- all PIPE members (3)
- 2 BLAC members
- Bridges members (how many?)
- 4 professors (Paul Dosh, Maria Elena Cepeda, Rogelio Miñana, Galo González)
which so far adds up to 35 invitations.
- Regarding inviting members of other organizations, the following was discussed:
- Carme proposed that organizations that have invited Adelante! members in the past be invited: BLAC, PIPE, Bridges
- Alex F proposed that all organizations be invited. Group argued there were too many organizations
- Yongho proposed that organizations with whom Adelante! shares its members be invited: BLAC, QU, PIPE, MIO, CSA and Bridges
- Carmen's idea was adopted.
- there was a concern from Maribel that only students who were friends of adelante members currently present in the meeting were being considered for invitation.
[edit] T-Shirt
there is $182 left for T-shirts. during the meeting, it was believed that the group had only $70 left for T-shirts (umm we need to clarify this --Yonghokim 09:54, 25 Apr 2005 (CDT))
- Alex F asked if the money can be pushed back for next semester. Answer: no
- Maribel offered to check prices by Tuesday, so that Adelante! could request additional allocations
