[edit] Activist Roundtable

[edit] T-Shirt design

group approved the design and was wondering on prices? (huh?) i don't remember this part well. alex said we could also use b/w (as opposed to color) cuz it would still be cool or something. --Yonghokim 21:10, 17 Apr 2005 (CDT)

[edit] Concert with MN NYCE

  • Tsione came asking for Adelante!'s support in getting MCSG funds for the MN NYCE concert on friday, which overlaps with springling.
  • group agrees in supporting it, and plan on making the argument that the audience for springling and MN NYCE are diff.
  • (later update) the move to get funding via MCSG failed. As reported in LB minutes of April 12:
Another request to host this off-campus event was disputed about whether or not the event would diverge students from Springaling and also, MCSG would be paying for an event at Cabooze, which would be paying for non-Mac students. Another motion to approve $750 for Minnesota Nice was not voted on since chair did not allow it. LB voted to over-run chair, but did not pass since it did not meet a 2/3 consensus. Thus, motion to approve $750 was not discussed further. [1]

[edit] Tsione Michael-Wolde's trip to Venezuela and Colombia

  • Tsione will be going to the Colombia Youth Festival to meet other activists, talk about the Iraq War, travel to war zones, meet with SINALTRAINAL and USO, labor unions from the Twin Cities, etc.
  • Yongho pointed out that going to a war zone might have legal implications beyond MCSG's control (handled at the level of the provost)
    • Tsione explained that all funds would go to the Anti-War Committee and AWC had organized things so that no legal implications could be derived from any injury.
  • group agreede to make a funding request for Tsione's trip to Venezuela.
    • Tsione needs to submit a proposal to Adelante@macalester.edu by wednesday, so that Adelante! can submit it to FAC for review and then have it considered by the LB on the Following tuesday.

[edit] Arcadio Palanu Salamic

  • Yongho mentioned Arcadio, who wants to come talk at Macalester about Mayan religions. Group rejected the idea.

[edit] Elections

  • Group approved holding elections next week.

[edit] Coke campaign

  • Yongho was contacted by Gerardo Cajamarca, who wants to come again to Macalester to talk about Coke. Group agreed that the issue is well overused, and bringing actually may result in harm in the upcoming August decision on whether or not to renew the exclusive contract with coke.
  • Group also briefly considered if Adelante! had a stance on Coke, and resolved there was no stance at the org level although individual support of several members on ending the contract with Coke existed.

[edit] Latina/o Studies

  • Alex brough draft of the letter to be signed by Adelante! Group agreed that Adelante!'s position was to remove the latino studies program from Hispanic Studies, as it was too constrained.
  • Yongho pointed out that there were many resources (principally the number of faculty - 12 profs) to be exploited by latina/o studies, but group considered the actual harm by its current political climate was worse.
